En el 2005 Tarja fue expulsada de la banda por conflictos con el resto de sus miembros y fue reemplazada posteriormente, en 2007, por la sueca Anette Olzon.  Tarja es una de las cantantes más populares de su género en la mayor parte de Europa. Desde 1996 ha lanzado nueve álbumes de estudio (seis con Nightwish y tres como solista), gozando de gran popularidad en Finlandia, donde ha realizado numerosas apariciones en TV. Gracias a su carrera solista, Tarja ha sido nominada en dos ocasiones a los Emma Awards (equivalentes finlandeses al Grammy) en 2006 y 2007, y prenominada a un Grammy 2009 por su colaboración con el artista Schiller. El 1 de septiembre del 2010 lanzó a la venta su segundo álbum de estudio solista, llamado What Lies Beneath.
